This morning, I marched in a Memorial Day parade for the first time in twenty-three years. Even though I was escorting Philip as he walked with his Cub Scout pack, I found myself moving in time with the high school marching band, trying to maintain an eight-to-five step. Old habits die hard.
Just like back in my own marching band days, we participated in two different village parades. The weather was great for the parades but we were all a bit sweaty by the second one. As I looked at the boys wilting in the heat I thought how this was a bit rough on them.
Then I realized the ridiculousness of that thought on this of all days. Standing in the sun for a few minutes? Not so bad when you consider the fates of the men whose names were being recited. This was a small sacrifice for us to make to remember those who fought and died in defense of our nation.
So, I’m trying not to complain that I missed a spot with my sunscreen or that my feet are a bit tired. Let’s hope I can maintain my perspective of gratitude and respect for more than a day.
It’s been about ten years since I’ve marched, and it was also for scouts. Excellent perspective – I’m trying to keep mine in place as well.

Still working on maintaining perspective.

It is a sobering thought when you consider the reason for the march, but it’s also a good reminder of what we can do for others because they did incredible things for us.

It was nice to put flowers on the graves and hang flags in honor of them.

Lol. I’m a former marching bander, too, and like you, I can still measure off yards with an 8-count.
