He did not need to lasso from the sky
the paper moon he taped upon a string.
He flings the lunar disc to see it fly
then sets the yellow pendulum to swing.
He stole it from a pop-up book of rhyme:
the circle’s now a vicious vandal’s prize.
The cow can’t jump, forever froze in time,
on damaged pages mending can’t disguise.
Suspend your judgment, grieve not for the cow;
the dish elopes with spoon, the dog tee-hees.
The moon, set free, has new adventures now.
It’s always full and never made of cheese.
Forgive the boy destruction of the book.
Instead you’ll find creation, should you look.
My first attempt at a sonnet as part of the yeah write February poetry slam. I was inspired by this:
Very nice 🙂 Lovely rhythm and imagery.

I loved making the image of the book in my mind as I read, and the concluding couplet is beautiful.

I swear I replied to this already . . .
I hesitated about including the photo, but I was afraid that I wasn’t being clear. I’m glad you were able to create your own mental image.

A love poem to your lovely little boy. This feels absolutely effortless to me. Wonderful, Cyn.

When he asked for string and tape, and I saw how he was going to use it, the gears just started turning. Definitely not effortless, but I’m glad it reads that way.

This is amazing! What a lovely story and effortless way of reconstructing the classic story. I love these two couplets: “The cow can’t jump, forever froze in time,/on damaged pages mending can’t disguise” and “The moon, set free, has new adventures now./ It’s always full and never made of cheese.” So positive and silver lining-y!

I thought this sonnet would have been the perfect counterpoint to my nonfiction story last week. That one was so “woe is me.” But I saved it for this week so I could join in the poetry slam fun.

I love that the moon is off having other adventures. I immediately placed him in Alice In Wonderland as I read.

I think we all want to break free at times and go off on new adventures. I imagined myself as the moon.
