Ten Things of Thankful

In the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. ‘Tis the season for short-tempers and high stress. Instead of letting that stuff get me down, I’m going to list ten things for which I am thankful.

1. Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas is streaming on Netflix. Philip will watch this year round. And now, I don’t have to be sad the only copy has been checked out of the library.

2. Just when I was kicking myself for forgetting to order a calendar, my very own limited edition “The Most Interesting Sock Monkey in the World” calendar showed up on my doorstep. My best friend’s sock monkey traveled the world with her. She took his photo in front of famous sites in the United States and abroad.

3. Our home warranty came in handy last week, allowing us to fix some plumbing problems. Among the issues was the now silent toilet in the master bath that had been running all the time. Bonus: they called it a “water closet” on the work order.

4. Philip has been feeling crafty. He wants to cut up things and then glue them together. I had to move all of the scissors because he destroyed a jar opener. Now, he comes to ask me for the scissors. And then glue. I love his creativity. He definitely doesn’t get that from me.

5. The other day when Philip was in crafty mode, he made this from an old paper towel roll. I have no idea where he found the googly eyes or the small, pink ball that he used for the nose. We found the green sticker that we used for his mouth together. When I told Philip, “Show Daddy the nose.” Philip misunderstood me. He took the object over to Peter, and then pointed to his dad’s nose while saying, “nose.” Um, I didn’t know that Philip could identify any parts of his body. This is the first time he has demonstrated that knowledge.

6. Now that Philip has a TV and DVD player in his room, he doesn’t need to wake me up in the middle of the night and drag me to the living room. Oh, did I mention that he totally figured out how to run the TV and DVD player by himself? That means he turns it on without my help. Although this makes me feel superfluous, I do appreciate grabbing some extra ZZ’s. Also, Philip is more likely to fall back asleep when he just stays in his room. Which means even more sleep for Mommy.

7. We now have a new library. It’s a small branch, but they have a great selection of new releases and lots of “Curious George” collections on DVD. Philip and I attended our first event on Saturday afternoon. He did a great job listening as a storyteller shared interactive tales from around the world.

8. Stop the presses: I baked on Sunday afternoon. I was as shocked as anyone to realize I had all the ingredients I needed to make a banana cake. Philip was a big help mashing up the ripe bananas in a Zip-loc bag. He was very thorough. He also enjoyed supervising me as I used the electric mixer. He hasn’t tried the fruits of his labors yet, but I was pleased that I didn’t burn the cake.

I figured people would demand photographic evidence of my baking.

9. After completing our baking project, the weather was still nice enough weather for a walk with Philip and Roscoe. The sun was actually shining!

10. As of 4:30 pm today, I don’t have to go back to work until January 2. If that’s not reason enough to be thankful, I don’t know what is.

Ten Things of Thankful

Lizzi of Considerings is hosting a special renegade edition of her Ten Things of Thankful Blog Hop. The challenge is deceptively simple: Find ten things, right now, to be thankful for about today. The goal is to balance the bad with the good, to find hope when all seems hopeless, to combat despair with joy. The renegade hop is open until after Christmas.

  1. That’s so completely awesome that Phillip was able to surprise you like that. How wonderful.

The baking looks good, and I’m glad you’re sorted for Curious George.

Glad you’ve come and joined in with our little hop – it’s so much fun, and really a delight to be able to find so many things to be thankful for in a life where, just five minutes ago, things seemed pretty gloomy. I hope you enjoyed it.

Also, TOTALLY with you on the ‘off work til the 2nd’ thing 😉

What do you have to say about that?
